Day 4 at Earth Arts erupted with creativity and excitement as we embarked on bright and explosive artistic adventures! It was a perfect mix of STEM and traditional art that left us all feeling inspired and energized.
We started the day by sculpting our imaginations with a lesson on sculptures, from the formidable Terracotta Army to the playful pile of Play-Doh by Jeff Koons. Then, we put our own spin on things by creating our own volcanoes in completely original and unique styles. As we learned about the fiery nature of volcanoes and their vibrant aftermath, our imaginations erupted with colorful possibilities.
For our second craft, we dived into the art of collages, drawing inspiration from the beloved children's book author and illustrator, Eric Carle! We marveled at the craft behind iconic stories like "The Hungry Caterpillar" and "Brown Bear." With paint-soaked strips of paper and scissors in hand, we crafted our very own Eric Carle collage sun, each piece bursting with color and imagination.
Finally, how could we do a volcano craft and not see it explode? After our lunch, we all gathered around for a little science experiment - a volcanic eruption demonstration! It was so fun to see our craft come to life, bubbling and fizzing with excitement!
To recreate the eruption at home:
- Pour one tablespoon of baking soda into the cup inside the volcano
- Add a drop of dish soap on top of baking soda
- In a separate cup, mix 2 tablespoons of vinegar with a drop of red or orange food coloring
- Count down to eruption and pour the liquid mixture into volcano, and watch the lava erupt!
